I planted about a hundred onion sets in mid-May. I watered them a couple of times, the rains came, and about 99% of them came up. Their green shoots reaching for the sky were beautiful.
But one of them was different.
It was white.
The little shoot was pale and kind of ghostly among all its green brothers and I wondered how a white onion could possibly survive.
The short answer is it can’t.
Without that lovely green chlorophyll that virtually all plants have, it can’t do that miraculous thing that plants do when they turn sunlight into energy and make food for themselves. The little white onion, even though it’s planted in good soil, cannot survive.
And, that made me think of the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Jesus said He was the light of the world, and indeed He does shine on all the world. But the Holy Spirit leads, guides, teaches, comforts, and fuels our faith and our works for Him. (See Ephesians 2:10) The Holy Spirit is like the chlorophyll that plants have that turns light into energy, equipping us and enabling us to produce fruit to the praise of His glory.
Without the Holy Spirit, our faith and our lives would be pale and lifeless –ghostly, even.
HALLELUJAH LORD, for the gift of the Holy Spirit!
AMEN!
