Is Joy Mandatory?

Near the end of June, I attended the Harvest Network International Annual Assembly in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania. A number of pastors shared messages on the theme of “resilience,” including Pastor Cliff Wrener of Harbor Church in Hastings, MN, whose message, titled “Obedience” was all about joy. And it got me thinking…

Is it disobedient to be a joyless Christian? Is joy a mandatory quality of the obedient Christian? As a child, it was not uncommon to be exposed to fire and brimstone sermons focused on the fear of the Lord, and surely the Bible does say that “Fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…” in Psalm 111:10, but that’s not the whole verse. The second half of that verse is , “all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.”

So, of course the LORD is worthy of reverence and awe and falling-to-our-knees respect, but is that eternal praise the One Who is Worthy joyous? Does God ask for joy?

When I looked it up, I found the words “joy"  and “rejoice” appear over 400 times in the Bible. Let's take a look at some of them:

Leviticus 23:40 On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees—and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. (Seven days! Sure seems God’s pretty serious about this joy thing.)

Deuteronomy 12:18 Instead, you are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place the Lord your God will choose—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns—and you are to rejoice before the Lord your God in everything you put your hand to.

Deuteronomy 16:13-15 Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. 14 Be joyful at your festival—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. 15 For seven days celebrate the festival to the Lord your God at the place the Lord will choose. For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete. (Again with a solid week of celebration!)

God tells Israel all the things they must obey and how they should serve Him, then lists all the amazing blessings they will enjoy if they do so, then He lists all the curses they will endure if they do not, saying:

Deuteronomy 28: 47 Because you did not serve the Lord your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. (Lack of joy really seems to annoy the Lord!)

1 Chronicles 15:15-17 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord. David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.

1 Chronicles 16:10 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

1 Chronicles 16:27 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place. (Joy in His dwelling place!)

1 Chronicles 16:31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!” (His creation rejoices in him!)

1 Chronicles 16:33 Let the trees of the forest sing, let them sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.

In Nehemiah 8, after the people had rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem that had been torn down, the priest, Ezra, brings out the book of the Law and starts reading it aloud before all the people. Convicted of their sins, they break out in tears, weeping.

But Nehemiah comes before them saying:

10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”  11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.” 12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

(The joy of the LORD is your STRENGTH!)

John 15:10-12 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

Twice! Paul says it twice! Rejoice!

And, really, we have more cause for joy than any other people on earth! The God of the universe, the God who created anything and everything simply by speaking it into being loves US so much that He sent His only Son to die for us and bring us not just back into relationship with Him, but that we would be adopted into the family of God! We are sons and daughters in the kingdom of life and light! The kingdom of darkness has been defeated, nullified, brought to nothing and our inheritance of eternal life and eternal peace and ETERNAL JOY is guaranteed by God the Father, Jesus our savior, and His own Holy Spirit living in all who believe!

HALLELUJAH!

So, is joy mandatory? Are we being disobedient if we live without joy?

Paul writes in Romans 8:37-39  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If that doesn’t bring us true real and complete  joy, we are just not paying attention.
